Betting basics: How do PokerStars odds work?

As touched upon in our latest PokerStars review, the odds provide the backbone to your betting experience. Over at PokerStars, we found that odds are available before kickoff, during the match, and ahead of upcoming competitions. Plus, you’ll find that these odds extend far beyond standard 1X2s, spreads, and totals markets.

PokerStars odds provide you with a chance of viewing the probability or likelihood of a specific outcome. Lower odds indicate that a team or player is more likely to win, while higher odds indicate the opposite.

At PokerStars, you’ll find that you can head on over to the ‘Sports’ section of the site and instantly be greeted by the most popular odds ahead of today’s schedule. You can also toggle over to the ‘in-play’ section to view current fixtures or check out ‘my bets’ for a look at wagers you have already placed.

Once you’ve selected a sport or league, you’ll be shown the most competitive odds available. Initially, 1X2s, spreads, and totals will be visible; however, once you click on the fixture, you’ll open the doors to a range of competitive odds across additional markets.

We have chosen a match between the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays (MLB) to showcase just how competitive the PokerStars’ odds and overall coverage are.

Over 7.5 runs (Total)1.801.801.80
Home Run (Cal Raleigh)3.403.803.50
+3.5 to win (Seattle)1.131.16N/A

As you can see from this quick comparison, PokerStars stands its ground against some of the biggest sportsbooks around. Although bet365 offers greater odds across the board, you’ll find that the difference is minimal. Then, when comparing PokerStars’ odds to 888 sport odds, we found an even smaller difference. Not to mention that PokerStars appeared to have a bigger range of available markets.

How to read PokerStars odds: An explanation of fractional, American, and decimal odds

While working our way around the PokerStars app and desktop site, we found that you could soon alter the way your PokerStars odds are displayed. To do so, you simply need to click on the ‘Settings’ tab from within the ‘Sports’ section before selecting one of the following.

Fractional: As the name suggests, your fractional odds are displayed as a fraction. The denominator (the number under or to the right of the line) takes your bet value into account, and the numerator (the number above or to the left of the line) dictates the outcome. To showcase this in a literal sense, check out these examples.

  • Manchester United (1/4) to win: In this example, Manchester United are clear favourites. Here, you need to bet £4 to win £1 back. Should you bet £20, you’ll win £5, and so on. It is also worth noting that your initial bet will be returned.
  • LA Rams (5/2) to win: In this example, the LA Rams are considered slight underdogs. Here, you need to bet £2 to win £5 back. Should you bet £10, you’ll win £25, and so on. Of course, your initial bet will also be added to your winnings.

American: Alternatively, you may wish to check out the American odds. In this format, you will find that favorites are displayed with a minus (-) symbol, and underdogs are highlighted with a plus (+) symbol. With favorites, you’ll find that the numbers that follow refer to the amount that must be bet in order to win £100. With underdogs, you’ll find that the numbers that follow showcase the amount you will win from a £100 bet. Check out these examples.

  • Arsenal (-130) to win: Arsenal have just sneaked in as the favorites in this example. As the favorites, you’ll need to bet £130 in order to win £100. This would leave you with a total of £230. Any other value of bet that you place would then leave you with equivalent winnings. For instance, a £13 bet would allow you to win £10, and so on.
  • NY Jets (+380) to win: In this example, the New York Jets are considered the underdogs. With this one, you would be expected to bet £100 in order to win £380 back. Again, any bet placed under or over £100 will lead to winnings divisible by this amount. As an example, a £10 bet could lead to £38 in winnings.

Decimal: The decimal format is arguably the easiest to follow. Here, you will find that odds will be displayed as decimals, and for every £1 you bet, you’ll take home those odds. Let us explain through these examples.

  • Leicester Tigers (1.5) to win: In this example, you’ll find that you can win £1.50 back from a £1 bet. In other words, you will receive 50p in winnings. Clearly, this makes Leicester Tigers the favorites.
  • Chicago Bulls (4.4) to win: In this final example, you’ll see that you can win £4.40 back from a £1 bet. This will lead to £3.40 in winnings, should the Bulls end up winning. With these odds, the Bulls would be deemed underdogs.
