SailGP is an annual, global racing championship. Powered by Nature™ and without compromise.
The world’s fastest racing in class. Epic battles between nations and top athletes. Cutting-edge tech. And programs that set leading sustainability standards worldwide.
SailGP presents the fastest, most competitive inshore stadium racing in an unrivalled atmosphere at some of the world’s most iconic harbors. The spectacular fan experience is available in venue, on the water, on air, through an award-wining app and year-round through digital channels.
With Season 2 underway, the fierce national rivalries have been supercharged with the entry of new teams, plus Ben Ainslie to the British squad. Can Tom Slingsby and the Australian team lift the trophy again, or will they face an upset from hungry newcomers, or an established team looking for national redemption?
Expect intense action as teams of world-class athletes ‘fly’ identical supercharged F50 catamarans, engineered for racing at electrifying speeds exceeding 50 knots (nearly 60 mph/100 kph).
Each event includes two competition days, featuring five fleet races leading to a final match race between the two leaders. Points are accumulated at each event throughout the season, culminating with a thrilling $1 million winner-takes-all championship race at the Grand Final.
Smash expectations – this is racing at its best.
Racing doesn’t stop there. SailGP is underwritten by Larry Ellison, a passionate sailor who has been personally and financially committed to the growth and advancement of sailing for multiple decades. The league operates a hybrid model of shared services to avoid duplication of resources, while moving toward a franchise proposition with teams run by external partners entering the sport.
SailGP is sanctioned by World Sailing and boasts an internationally acclaimed race management team headed by Iain Murray, Olympian and former America’s Cup helmsman. Richard Slater, one of the world's top international umpires and vice chairman of the World Sailing Racing Rules Committee, serves as chief umpire and is responsible for the racing rules. SailGP utilizes information technology and modern navigation hardware and software in race management and umpiring to ensure consistency, fairness and safety.
While the majority of SailGP teams are fully comprised of athletes native to the country they represent, select countries without the experience necessary to pilot the F50s are permitted to build progressively to full nationality over five years.
